Safety: Intravenous magnesium
Posted in News
It has been recognised for some time that Intravenous magnesium sulfate has caused serious harm or death when used incorrectly. In particular, the use of concentrates containing 50% w/v of magnesium sulfate are associated with a serious risk if incorrectly diluted and administered. Safety guidelines suggest that only ready-to-use concentrations of magnesium sulfate are used in obstetric and paediatric units to minimise the risk.
The new safety report shows the usage comparison between magnesium sulfate 50% solution for injection/infusion and magnesium sulfate 20% solution for injection/infusion in obstetric specialties.
