IV Abuse of Tropicamide Eye Drops
Posted in News
There have been reports for several years coming from other countries (Italy, France and Russia) that Tropicamide eye drops have been misused and injected. It is often taken in conjunction with alcohol, marijuana and opiates with the medical effects including slurred speech, persistent mydriasis, unconsciousness/unresponsiveness, hallucinations, kidney pain, dysphoria, “open eye dreams,” hyperthermia, tremors, suicidal feelings, convulsions, psychomotor agitation, tachycardia and headache.
Recently, evidence of Tropicamide eye drops have been found in recreational areas in the UK, but no evidence of injecting. For this reason, we have now included the following four Virtual Medicinal Products (VMP) in the ADIoS system for monitoring. These will show from Tuesday 21st June 2022:
• Tropicamide 0.5 % Eye Drops
• Tropicamide 0.5% eye drops 0.5ml unit dose preservative free
• Tropicamide 1 % Eye Drops
• Tropicamide 1 % eye drops 0.5ml unit dose preservative free
